Defense challenges wiretaps in Laos overthrow case
Defense lawyers are claiming the rights of 12 men charged with plotting the violent overthrow of the communist regime in Laos were trampled when federal agents illegally tapped the telephones of two defendants.
In a motion filed late Friday, the lawyers are asking the judge to rule out as evidence the fruits of the electronic surveillance. In the alternative, they want an evidentiary hearing under Franks v. Delaware, the seminal 1978 U.S. Supreme Court decision that sets out the criteria for court-authorized wiretaps.Read more

Lao Christians Expelled from Village Suffer Critical Illnesses
DUBLIN (CDN) — In spite of assurances of religious rights by officials in March, Lao Christians expelled from a village in Saravan Province in January are suffering from a prolonged lack of adequate food and clean water.
The lack of basic resources has led to diarrhea, dehydration, eye and skin infections, fainting and general weakness for the Christians expelled from Katin village, and one person has died, Human Rights Watch for Lao Religious Freedom (HRWLRF) reported.Read more

French agency perks up Lao coffee sector
A 1.2 million euro (12.6 billion kip) grant by the French Development Agency (AFD) will help coffee growers and producers in Laos to improve the quality of the products they supply to domestic and export markets.
An agreement for the supplementary grant was signed yesterday in Vientiane by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Dr Bounthavy Sisouphanthong, French Ambassador to Laos, Mr Francois Senemaud, and representative of AFD to Laos, Mr Guy Francois.Read more
450-year projects progressing slowly
Work on some projects set for completion by Vientiane's 450th anniversary as capital this year has fallen short of expectations, according to municipal authorities.

Laos postpones baht-denominated bond to year's end
The Lao government expects to issue Thai baht denominated bonds of up to 3 billion Thai baht (US$80 million) at the end of this year, hoping to raise funds to build energy infrastructure in Laos, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The move follows the postponement of bond issuance earlier this year due to the unfavourable financial climate in the region. Read more
